Program Description
In a 90-minute interactive presentation led by Cultural Arts Educator and Visual Artist, Madona Cole-Lacy, students will explore the history and significance of the United States Juneteenth holiday. They will gain insight into the emancipation of enslaved Africans in America and West Africa, and journey through the celebrations of freedom by the Creoles of Freetown, Sierra Leone, expressed through art, fashion, and culture. Option #2  is a hands-on experience which offers a FREEDOM-themed Textile Designing Workshop. Students will learn about  traditional West African Adinkra and Gara textile design techniques before creating their own unique expressions of freedom on fabric panels. The workshop fee covers artist fees and materials. Contact us for pricing options for a group larger than the maximum capacity specified.
