Program Description
Through songs played on a variety of instruments and stories from his travels throughout Mississippi, Toby Walker illustrates how Blues music reflected the period of the great migration of African Americans in U.S. history. Toby offers Blues workshops in which students are taught to collaborate with each other as they write their own lyrics in the Blues literary form. Students who play instruments are encouraged to bring them into the class and are taught to perform a simple Blues progression. The workshop culminates with an in-classroom concert which consists of Blues songs written and performed by the students themselves.
